English Environment
How easily you can get through daily life in English.
- EF English Proficiency Index 2025 score on a 0 to 10 scale where each EF level spans two points (400 is 0, 500 is 4, 600 is 8), plus 2 points where English is an official language, capped at 10.
- Countries EF doesn't test because English is the native language score 10.
- Where English is official but EF has no score, the score is 8.

Safety & Stability
How peaceful and secure the country is.
- Average of two scores out of 10: the Legatum Prosperity Index 2026 Civil Peace pillar (out of 100, divided by 10) and the Global Peace Index 2026 (1 to 5, where 1 is most peaceful, turned into 10 to 0).
- Legatum's 2026 edition has no pillar named Safety & Security; Civil Peace is the 2026 pillar used for it.
- A country one source doesn't cover is scored on the other.

Cultural Compatibility
How open the country's values and democracy are, and how strong its communities are.
- Average of three scores out of 10: the Legatum Prosperity Index 2026 Freedom of Dissent and Integrity of Communities pillars (out of 100, divided by 10) and the EIU Democracy Index 2024 (out of 10).
- Legatum's 2026 edition replaced the Personal Freedom and Social Capital pillars; these two are the nearest.
- InterNations Expat Insider isn't used: it ranks 31 destinations and publishes no dataset.
- A country a source doesn't cover is scored on the others.
