The pipeline to permanent residency

Prove Passive Income or Pension
Rentista requires stable passive income (investments, rentals); Pensionado requires a qualifying pension. Employment income does not qualify. Assemble documented proof above the consulate's monthly threshold.
Consulate or Migraciones Application
Apply through your Argentine consulate or, if already in-country, the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, with income proof, apostilled documents, and a police-clearance certificate. Requirements vary by consulate.
Enter and Register (DNI + CUIL)
Enter on the temporary-residence visa and obtain your DNI (national ID) and CUIL/tax number, which you'll need for banking, leases, and healthcare enrollment.

Temporary Residence (Renewable)
Rentista/Pensionado grants temporary residence, renewed by re-proving income each cycle. Note that rentista status does not permit local employment.
Before expiry
Permanent Residence
After maintaining temporary residence (commonly 3 years), convert to permanent residence, which ends the income-renewal cycle and lifts work restrictions.
Citizenship
Argentina allows applying for citizenship after 2 years of continuous legal residence — among the fastest paths globally — through a federal court process. Dual citizenship with the US is permitted.
