What the signals say about care
The normalized healthcare index, plus which programs grant local-system access.
How the system works
Mexico's IMSS provides public healthcare for employed residents and their families. INSABI/IMSS-Bienestar covers uninsured. Quality varies significantly by facility and region.
What expats actually use
Most Americans use private healthcare. Costs are 50-80% less than the US. Private insurance $50-150/mo. Hospital de Angeles, Star Médica are the main private groups.
Quality and access
CDMX, Guadalajara, Monterrey have world-class private facilities. Dental and vision dramatically cheaper. Rural access is limited. Medical tourism is a real industry.
Plan B holder considerations
If you're not living in Mexico, you don't need IMSS enrollment. Carry travel insurance for visits. If you relocate later, private insurance is easy to obtain with residency.

Several immigration fees and reference thresholds are expressed in UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización), which is updated once a year and published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación. Amounts denominated in UMA move when the UMA is revised. Verify the current fee schedule before budgeting an application.
Mexico's proof-of-income and savings thresholds for temporary and permanent residency are set as multiples of the national minimum wage, which is revised each year (effective in early January). When the base figure rises, the amounts an applicant must show at the consulate rise with it. Confirm the current consular figures before applying — the multiples, not a fixed peso amount, are what the rule fixes.
