How the system works

The public system is funded by tax and free or low-cost for residents, delivered through a regionally organized public health service. GPs are gatekeepers and specialists require referral; funding is constrained, so wait times track demand.

What you'll actually use

You register with a GP practice for routine care. Public specialists are free but carry 3–6-month waits for non-urgent cases; about a third of the population holds private insurance for faster access.

Quality and access

Hospital and clinic quality is good, with trained staff and modern equipment — Auckland and Wellington have excellent facilities. Rural regions offer lower-cost services but longer drives in an emergency.

The private market

Private hospitals and clinics operate in the major cities, and Southern Cross is the dominant private insurer. Private cover runs roughly NZD $1,000–2,500/year, and many expats combine public and private.
