Romania runs a universal public system funded by payroll taxes and government contributions, administered by the National Health Insurance House (CNAS). All residents get basic coverage — GP visits, emergencies, hospitalization, and subsidized medications — with a growing private sector alongside.
What you will use

Quality and access
Quality is excellent in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca, with modern private facilities and English-speaking doctors. Public hospitals are functional but aging, rural specialist services are limited, and non-urgent public waits can exceed three months. Emergency care is reliable in cities.

A robust private sector in the major cities offers modern clinics, English-speaking staff, and minimal waits. Dental is affordable (cleanings €30–€50, implants €800–€1,500) and vision similarly cheap. Many expats use private care for routine needs and public care for emergencies.
