How the system works
You navigate 21 regions that fund public care through taxes. Primary care runs through health centers (vårdcentral) and hospitals handle specialist and emergency care. Care is free for children under 20.
What you will use
You register at a vårdcentral for a €0–€30 co-pay per visit, under an annual high-cost ceiling around €120. Prescriptions run €10–€25. New arrivals buy private bridge insurance (~€80/mo) until eligible.
Quality and access
You get top OECD rankings in cancer survival (around 88%) and low antibiotic use. GP waits run about two weeks, specialists 90+ days; urban Stockholm is faster than the northern rural regions. The 1177.se app books care nationwide.
The private market
You can go private for faster specialists (€150–€300 a visit) or dental (€200–€500 a filling). Vision exams run about €50. Private cover at €50–€150/mo for extras is common for expats initially.
