You navigate a mixed system: public ASSE hospitals for basics and mutualistas (non-profit cooperatives) for comprehensive care, funded by contributions, with private clinics supplementing. Everyone is covered after residency.
What you will use
You enroll in a mutualista (roughly 3–8% of income, €50–€150/month) for GP visits and medications; emergencies are free at public hospitals. Pharmacies are widespread and generics are cheap (€5–€20 scripts).

Care is high-quality with short waits — days for specialists in the cities. Urban Montevideo excels while rural areas rely on clinics, and WHO ranks Uruguay top in the region.
The private market
You can opt for private insurance (€40–€200/month) for English-speaking doctors and no queues. Dental and vision are separate (about €30–€50 a visit), with top clinics like CASMU in the capital.
