How the system works
Vietnam runs a mixed public-private system. Social health insurance covers citizens and, after about six months' residency and contributions, working expats — roughly 80% of basic care. Private hospitals such as Vinmec, FV, and Family Medical serve internationals to Western standards. Vaccination coverage is high but unevenly distributed.
What expats actually use
Most use private clinics for roughly €30–60 consults, paid in cash or through insurance, and pharmacies for cheap generics. Expat insurance (~€50–150/mo) is the key purchase because it covers medical evacuation. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have 24/7 international facilities.
Quality and access
Urban private care rivals regional peers; public hospitals are overcrowded, and rural areas lack specialists, so patients travel to the cities. Tropical-disease risks like dengue make vaccines and mosquito precautions worthwhile. Maternal care is rated good in the major cities.
The private market
International-affiliated hospitals charge roughly €100–300 for specialists and €50–100 for dental; annual family packages run higher. Insurers like Cigna are common. The most serious or complex cases are sometimes medevaced to Bangkok or Singapore.
