How the system works
Canada's Medicare is single-payer but provincially run — each province operates its own plan. Medically necessary hospital and physician care is publicly funded; you present a provincial health card, not a bill.
What newcomers actually use
New residents apply for a provincial health card on arrival, and several provinces impose a waiting period of up to three months. Most people carry private insurance to bridge that gap and to cover prescription drugs, dental, and vision.
Quality and access
Quality is high and care is universal, but non-urgent specialist and imaging wait times can be long. Major cities are well-served; rural and remote access is thinner.
