What the signals say about care
The normalized healthcare index, plus which programs grant local-system access.
How the system works
Every resident is legally required to buy insurance from private, rate-regulated carriers — no one is left uninsured by law. GPs (the huisarts) are the gatekeepers: you register with one and reach specialists only by referral.
What expats actually use
You register with a local huisarts for all routine care. Specialists require a referral and can carry 6–12 week waits. Prescriptions and labs are covered, though an annual deductible (roughly €300–1,000) applies before most coverage kicks in.
Quality and access
Hospitals and clinics are world-class with excellent outcomes; the Lancet healthcare-access index rates the Netherlands among the very best (98). English-speaking doctors are common in the cities, and urban–rural access is unusually uniform. Maternal care rates excellent.
The private market
There is no true private alternative — insurance is mandatory, and supplemental private cover is largely redundant. Out-of-pocket private consults run roughly €80–120 after insurance; medical tourism is essentially unheard of because domestic care is so strong.
