The pipeline to permanent residency

Set Up the Business + Capital
DAFT lets US citizens live in the Netherlands as self-employed. Prepare your business and place the treaty's required business capital into a Dutch business account — this is the core qualifying condition, not employer sponsorship.
Register with the KvK
Register your business (a sole proprietorship or BV) with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) so it exists as a legal entity before the residence application.
IND Residence Application
Apply to the IND for the DAFT self-employment residence permit. As a US national you're generally exempt from the MVV entry-visa step, and processing typically runs weeks rather than months.
BSN + Municipal Registration
Register at your municipality (gemeente) to receive a BSN — which requires a Dutch address, the step the housing shortage makes hardest. The BSN unlocks banking, taxes, and insurance enrollment.
